The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) was established in 1963 as an autonomous body within the United Nations with the purpose of enhancing the effectiveness of the work of the UN and its member states.

UNITAR designs and conducts close to 500 different training and knowledge-sharing events per year for some 50,000 beneficiaries worldwide. Participants include diplomats, other government officials, non-governmental representatives, and other stakeholders.

At the heart of UNITAR, the Multilateral Diplomacy Programme Unit (MDPU) delivers training workshops to address the needs of these international actors. MDPU’s activities cover a wide range of domains, including training on the UN system and skills development.

Objectifs de l'événement

he United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) plays a pivotal role in building the capacities of government officials, diplomats, and other stakeholders through targeted training programs. Therefore, UNITAR is delighted to offer a three day training workshops to participants for a full immersion into the international city of Geneva.

The overarching purpose of this activity is to bring the United Nations closer to the hearts of participants, allowing them a glimpse behind the scenes of the International Organisations in Geneva. In line with UNITAR's mandate, this programme aspires to enhance participants' knowledge and skills in the areas of international affairs and diplomacy. Moreover, special workshops will impart skills for a successful international career and prepare students for the application process within the UN system.

UNITAR further intends to strengthen the participants’ conviction of the principles enshrined in the UN Charter, especially human rights. It lastly aspires to give its participants the opportunity to gain valuable insights into possible employment opportunities in the United Nations system.

Objectifs d'apprentissage

The UNITAR Intensive Training in Multilateral Diplomacy serves to provide an overview of the United Nations. It will help participants build knowledge on international affairs, deliver training in core diplomatic skills and offer activities with Geneva-based agencies. At the end of the programme, participants should be able to:

  • Explain key components of the United Nations’ system and its agencies
  • Familiarize oneself with International Geneva as a city of multilateralism
  • Apply core skills and techniques of common diplomatic practice

Méthodologie

The training is designed to be interactive and participatory, combining lectures, group discussions, case studies, practical exercises, and role-playing simulations. Participants will actively engage in problem- solving activities, share insights, and apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios. Multimedia resources will be utilized to enhance understanding. The interactive approach fosters collaboration, critical thinking, and practical skill acquisition for participants' engagement in multilateral fields.

The programme is tailored to meet the specific needs of participants with the training designed to accommodate a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 35 participants. Please note that this is an exclusive programme, and participation is strictly by private invitation from UNITAR.
